Brockenhurst College has a new and exciting opportunity for an Art & Textiles Technician to join the team on a part time, term time only basis. In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £24,834 per annum pro rata.

About the role:

You'll be joining a vibrant and creative department where innovation, collaboration and student success are at the heart of everything we do. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation and high standards of the creative arts and media department. This position involves coordinating the efforts of the creative technician team, maintaining studio and workshop facilities, managing resources, and ensuring health and safety compliance. The Art & Textiles Technician supports both staff and students by providing technical expertise, overseeing equipment and material maintenance, and facilitating a conducive learning environment.

Responsibilities as our Art & Textiles Technician will include:

  • Attend weekly Creative Technician team meetings.
  • Review and manage the Creative Helpdesk alongside the technician team.
  • Develop, maintain and organise specialist textiles resources and facilities.
  • Ensure workshops, studios and storage areas are effectively resourced and maintained.
  • Support curriculum areas by preparing materials, equipment and resources for lessons and projects.
  • Place orders through Business World and maintain departmental budget spreadsheets.
  • Contribute to budget management by sourcing materials and securing competitive pricing from suppliers.
  • Issue equipment, materials, books and specialist resources to staff and students.
  • Demonstrate the safe and effective use of textiles equipment, materials and processes, including sewing machines and specialist textile techniques.
  • Provide technical assistance and practical support during lessons, workshops and individual student projects.
  • Carry out and maintain records of regular safety inspections on equipment, tools and materials to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation
  • Assist staff with administrative and clerical duties, including maintaining departmental records.
  • Support the organisation and installation of exhibitions, displays and student showcases.
  • Help maintain a safe, creative and professional working environment across the department.

As our Art & Textiles Technician, you’ll ideally have:

  • A degree, relevant professional qualification or significant industry experience in Textiles, Art & Design, Graphics or a related creative discipline.
  • Experience supporting teaching and learning through technical or workshop-based support.
  • Specialist knowledge and practical experience in textiles, including the use and maintenance of sewing machines and related equipment.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with staff and students.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Empathy, patience and a commitment to supporting learners of all abilities.
  • A strong commitment to maintaining high standards of health and safety.
  • Experience managing resources, stock and departmental budgets.
  • Competence in using digital systems, software and administrative platforms relevant to the role.
  • Experience working within an educational environment.
  • Knowledge of contemporary textiles practices and creative technologies.
  • Experience supporting exhibitions, displays or public showcases.
  • First Aid or Health & Safety qualifications.
  • Experience of coordinating projects, prioritising workloads and monitoring progress against targets
