Here at Brockenhurst College, we are seeking a proactive and organised Catering Technician on an annualised hours (37 hours a week over 38 weeks per year) basis to support the smooth running of our Hospitality and Catering facilities. Working closely with lecturers and students, you will help maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety and efficiency across our kitchens, restaurant and public areas. In return you will receive a competitive salary of £24,834 per annum, pro rata.

We are a high-achieving college who attract around 2,800 sixth form students across the region each year. We are based within the stunning New Forest National Park and offer our students a huge range of courses and superb facilities.

The Role:

As our Catering Technician, you will undertake a range of duties in support of the academic and operational function of MJ’s. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a practical, hands-on environment and takes pride in maintaining high standards of organisation, hygiene and safety.

Responsibilities as our Catering Technician will include:

  • Maintaining all kitchen, restaurant and public areas to Environmental Health standards after practical sessions.
  • Ensuring the quick, hygienic cleaning of equipment and utensils used by students.
  • Keeping work areas and storerooms clean, tidy and safely organised.
  • Preparing, collecting and collating food orders for teaching staff.
  • Issuing and receiving equipment, materials and foodstuffs, including completing associated paperwork.
  • Receiving, unpacking and checking deliveries, processing documentation, and arranging returns of defective goods.
  • Preparing and weighing ingredients and materials for classes and assessments.
  • Supporting the sale of cooked items from practical sessions and assisting with external events.
  • Helping maintain food hygiene and safety systems, including record keeping and liaising with Environmental Health Officers.
  • Assisting with ordering food and commodities as directed.
  • Reporting maintenance issues and carrying out regular safety checks on equipment and tools.
  • Ensuring taps, gas points and sinks are in working order and reporting faults promptly.
  • Administering First Aid once trained and maintaining First Aid supplies.
  • Reporting any signs of pest activity.
  • Supporting the preparation, running and clearing of Open Evenings.
  • Making occasional purchases using the procurement card or petty cash.
  • Undertaking any other duties appropriate to the role.

As our Catering Technician, you’ll ideally have:

  • Good level of literacy and numeracy required
  • Previous experience in this type of role
  • Knowledge of store systems
  • The ability to communicate with students and staff effectively
  • The ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
  • IT literate
